The huge, ornately engraved ax that Kratos wields against all his enemies in God of War was not meant for him. In fact, as its creators Brok and Sindri tell during the game, it was made for Laufey, also known as Faye, the protagonist's deceased wife. It is she who, shortly before her death, entrusts it to Kratos. But why did Faye have such a weapon? The ax was conceived as a counterpart to Mjolnir, Thor's magical hammer, for purely defensive purposes. The thunder god's hammer was also created by Brok and Sindri, but seeing the wanton destruction that the latter spread thanks to his weapon, the two Huldra brothers felt responsible and decided to create another weapon capable of opposing it if there was a need. Laufey is chosen as the most suitable to wield it, given her role as protector of peace in Midgard, as can be seen in some wood paintings scattered throughout the game.
